Billr Invoice

An invoice that travels well.

A free international invoice generator, redesigned around route-aware VAT, GST and sales-tax guidance, a live preview and PDF export that stays in the browser.

The project

Billr Invoice is our free invoice generator for freelancers and small businesses with clients in other countries. We redesigned the website and the invoice workspace together, giving the product a calmer, more global character and a clearer path from the first question to a finished PDF. Both are built around the same idea: choose where business happens, and the invoice follows.

The challenge

Cross-border invoicing raises questions a domestic template never has to answer. Does VAT apply when a UK studio bills a client in Paris? Which registration number belongs on the invoice, and what wording explains a zero rate? People needed reassurance before they started and clear signposts once they did. The product also had to stay honest: tax depends on the facts of each supply, so guidance could never read like advice.

The approach

We gave the redesign generous white space, a chrome infinity ribbon that suggests work moving between places, and deep blue bands for the moments that matter most, such as privacy. Underneath, the structure follows the order people think in. Choose the supplier country, the client country and the type of customer, add the details, then review the guidance and download. Country route pages open the workspace with both countries already set.

Inside the experience

What we built

01

Guidance that follows the route

Pick where you work, where your client is and whether they are a business or a consumer. The workspace suggests a starting treatment, such as reverse charge, a GST-free export or a US nexus review, with matching registration labels and invoice wording to review and adjust.

02

A six-step workspace with a live preview

Parties, invoice details, items, payment, tax and review each have a clear step. The invoice updates as people type, so line items, currencies and per-line tax rates can be checked on the page before anything is downloaded.

03

Private by design

Addresses, tax IDs, bank details and logos stay in the browser session. The PDF is created on the device, with no account, subscription or server upload, and the website explains that promise in plain terms.

04

Routes, guides and honest limits

Popular routes such as UK to EU and Australia to US give people a direct starting point. Guides cover invoice essentials, reverse-charge wording and multi-currency invoicing, supported by an editorial policy and a clear reminder to verify each treatment against official rules.

The launched experience

The redesigned Billr Invoice is live with a new homepage, a rebuilt invoice workspace and route pages for common cross-border journeys. It covers 16 countries and regions and 13 currencies, and every invoice can be created and downloaded without signing up. Tax guidance is presented as a starting point, with a versioned ruleset and a prompt to confirm the treatment for each supply.

Helping people find the right fit

People rarely search for an invoice tool in general terms. They search for the journey in front of them: invoicing an EU client from the UK, or billing a US company from Australia. Billr's route pages, tax system guides and practical articles meet those searches directly, then open the workspace with the right countries already selected.
